How to Start a Candle Making Business

Printer-Friendly Format

If you want to start a candle making business, you can choose from a wide variety of candles such as scented candles, colored candles, beeswax candles or aromatherapy candles. Whichever type of candle is chosen by the entrepreneur, the basic steps to start a candle making business remain the same.

Identify the Market

For starting any business, the first step is always the identification of the target market. In the case of candle making, the market is determined by the type of candle the entrepreneur chooses to make. The target market for beeswax candles would be those individuals that are fond of products made from natural substances, whereas aromatherapy candles would need to be sold to those who believe in alternate therapies.

Small businesses such as candle making cannot afford to educate people for buying their products. Instead, they have to target their products to those who are already using the same type of products.

Decide Where and How to Sell the Product

Once the target market is identified, it is necessary to plan out how and where to sell the candles. It is easy and convenient to sell over the internet and you can do so from the confines of your home. The other alternative is to sell the candles to a store that is already selling such products. The candles can also be exhibited at arts and craft shows and sold there. However, booth space cost might be a deterring factor. Yet another alternative is to sell through the special order market, especially to those getting married. A tie-up with a wedding consultant can be very helpful for continued business.

The sale of candles is dictated by seasonal factors, with the Christmas season being the busiest period. As such the sale of the candles should be organized in many ways so that there is a steady business throughout the year.

Outlook and Earnings

It is not difficult to start a candle making business and it does not need much capital to start operations. Moreover, you can find supply companies for candle making equipment on the Internet which makes it easy to start without moving away from your home. The basic equipment such as wax and wicks can be obtained for less than $100 and even if aromatherapy candles are to be made, the essential oils will not cost much as only a few drops are needed to give scent to a candle. Although there is a steady demand for candles, people operating out of their homes do not make much money. Mostly it is considered as supplemental income. It is only those who are very strongly motivated and persevering in their attitude that can earn significantly from this business.

Getting Started

Apart from the candle making supplies, the entrepreneur needs to get a tax ID number and fulfill certain statutory formalities. The ID number will also help the business owner to purchase goods without paying sales tax.

The candle making business is ideal for those who want to work from home as they can obtain supplies and sell their products over the internet. However, those who wish to move out to sell their products can still keep making the candles at home.
